The Birds Eye View film festival is back for its 6th annual Film Festival of celebrating, championing and showcasing women filmmakers.

This year, they’re giving you the chance to see Lotte Reiniger’s ‘The Adventures of Prince Achmed’. Cutting-edge composer Mira Calix will premiere her new musical accompaniment to the silent animation live at the BFI. It’s sure to be an intriguing mix as Mira Calix’s intimate vocals and experimental electronic textures mix with the now iconic elegant shadows of Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 feature film.

A little bird tells me the festival will also be launching their Animation Lab at this event. Run in partnership with Warp Films, this year-long development programme  will bring together women animators and screenwriters to eventually develop an animated feature. One not to miss!

Live from what now?
You might be mistaken to think that Scotland is all about festivals, sheep and various deep fried foods.
It’s also a hotbed of interactive talent, as demonstrated by the University of Abertay Dundee’s unique and fascinating initiative, Dare to be Digital.

Every summer, teams of art, audio , and programming students are brought together over a terrifyingly short 12 week period to develop original game protoypes from scratch . They develop skills, gain experience, and open doors to the inustry in an intense hothouse environment.

And because we love all forms of animated content here at 4mations, we’re covering their showcase event live from its home at Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

Stepping into the glitzy showcase area, you can’t help to be blown away by the energy, passion, and fun coming from the students, kids, and industry types huddled around the various playing stations. I’ve already squashed little dudes in Colour Coded and got beaten up for stealing priceless artworks in Quick as Thieves. I’ve grimaced, yelped and apologized to the characters on screen, and to their creators. “Do you have much experience playing games?” Errm, no.
If the students don’t get tired of my layman’s questions , I’ll be giving you my pick of the competition over the next couple of days.

In Edinburgh? Come and join the fun!
It sure beats photocopying your face.

Dare Protoplay runs from the 14th to the 16th of August 2009.

If you’re in the West Midlands, chances are you’ve come across Animation Forum WM, a fantastic initiative to support and promote the animation industry in the region. With regular events, networking opportunities, and a community website, they offer something for new and established talent alike.

This month they’ve asked us to help them spread the word about their Out of Hours: Animation event. Go along for the results of their Great Animation Challenge, best of Flip screenings and a talk by stop-motion animator Linda McCarthy.

It’s a free event so don’t miss out, and make sure you come back to tell us all about it!

Still from the Earth's CoreNow that 4mations has moved to Scotland, we thought we’d take you on a tour of our local animation degree shows to bring you the best of our young talent.

Home to animation studios like Ink and a strong gaming industry, Dundee has a vibrant creative community and a strong tradition in arts education.  And apparently more sunshine than anywhere else in Scotland, but this could just be Dundonian Propaganda.

For the first time this year, Ducan of Jordanstone’s degree show is taking place in Vision, a funky, lofty space near the waterfront not far from the train station and the city centre.

The animation students make good use of their extensive space to display a compelling selection of life drawings, development work, and film posters.

There’s an eclectic mix of films: superheroes rub shoulders with gorillas and robots, monsters get fed, assassinations are foiled. The storytelling is sometimes a little bit shaky, but with short running times and a range of techniques on display, from Indian Ink to accomplished CGI, it’s a pleasant viewing experience that will leave you hopeful for these young graduates.
